This is a BMW OEM plastic expanding nut, also known as a plastic rivet nut or screw-in retainer. It is designed to act as a threaded seat for a self-tapping screw, commonly used on body panels and underbody components.

The nut is pushed into a pre-drilled hole. When a screw is driven into the center, the plastic body expands and locks in place, functioning like a captive nut.
